Repairs
to the road surface outside Swansea's new high-profile car park will
not be carried out for months, it emerged today. Holes appeared in
the surface at the entrance of the new Oystermouth Road car park just
months after it was laid.
Original roadworks caused weeks of tailbacks
in the summer as the access to the National Waterfront Museum car park
alongside the leisure centre was completed.
Thousands of visitors to £30.8
million museum will eventually use the car park every year but Swansea
Council says road users will be facing a bumpy ride at least until
the end of March.
A spokeswoman for Swansea Council said: "The
resurfacing works on Oystermouth Road were undertaken by the developer's
contractor as part of the works for the Maritime Museum.
"The developer is responsible under
a Highway Agreement to carry out the works to a defined specification."
The council said it has carried out some
emergency work already but the full repair will not be carried out
for months.
"The resurfacing works undertaken
are not satisfactory and the developer has been advised of this," said
the spokeswoman. "The council has carried out some urgent repairs
in the last few weeks to ensure public safety is not put at risk. It
is anticipated that the road will again be resurfaced prior to the
end of March. The delay in this work being carried out is weather related
and the work will be carried out during the night." |

The
Swansea group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists said the delay
is unacceptable. Group member Derek Evans said: "It's a pity
that it has got to go on so long and whenever they do the work it
will cause a lot of inconvenience.
"Obviously if there was an ideal
time to do the work it would have been during the winter months when
traffic levels are lower because of fewer tourists being about."
