More hold-ups on the way as car park entry hits snags
28th November 2003

The road outside Swansea's newest car park is already breaking up just a few months after it was laid. Holes are already forming in the road's surface at the entrance to the new car park in Oystermouth Road.

Next to Swansea Leisure Centre, it is designed to serve the new National Waterfront Museum that is currently under construction.

But visitors to the city will be facing a bumpy ride on their way to the new £30.8 million facility.

Lengthy delays were commonplace at the junction throughout the summer as constant lane closures plagued peak-time traffic.

And with Swansea Council now planning repair work to the surface, it looks like further tailbacks are on the way.

Derek Evans is from the Swansea group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and he is appalled by the prospect of further delays.

He said: "It's pretty pathetic. It's a shame as it sounds as if it hasn't been laid properly.

"These are supposed to be professionals.

"They should be able to make it bond and make it the right strength."

He said motorists will be annoyed at further hold-ups.

"It did affect me and I did get caught up in traffic jams there," he said. "It looks as if we are going to have to go through it all again if it is relaid."

He said the road's condition would make a bad impression of Swansea to visitors but he believes the problem is more widespread than this one patch.

"The roads here are pretty pathetic," he added. "I realise it costs money but with the taxes we pay a certain amount of it goes towards the upkeep of roads."

A Swansea Council spokes- woman said: "The tarmac laid on Oystermouth Road at the entrance to the new car park is showing signs of failure.

"This is a cause for concern and the council has taken up the matter with the contractor."
